The landmark case involved a high school girl who because she was a juvenile at the time was referred to in court and in court records by her initials TLO. Principal demanded to see her purse opened it and found a pack of cigarettes. When questioned by an assistant principal the student denied smoking. Appealed and the appellate court affirmed. TLO denied that she was smoking and Choplick decided to. Appealed again and the New Jersey State Supreme Court reversed the decision holding that Choplicks search was not reasonable because possession of cigarettes did not violate school rules.
